While it may seem surprising, harvesting timber is a great way to keep your forest healthy in the long run. Environmental Forest Products will work with you to protect your woodlot while encouraging regrowth and maintaining tree integrity. Along with keeping treestands open and healthy, harvesting timber will enable wildlife habitat, create a proper regeneration environment, and protect your forest. The income you receive from your timber harvest can be put towards ecology-improving projects for your forest. When a timber harvest is done correctly, both you and your forest win.
Why harvest timber? There are multiple reasons landowners choose to do so. Timber harvesting can be part of a comprehensive forest management plan, which is built with the forest’s health and sustainability in mind. Other reasons landowners may harvest their timber is due to natural disaster, such as a hurricane or forest fire, heavy insect infestations, or tree diseases, such as canker, mold, or fire blight. Selling the affected trees might salvage some of their value.
Picking the correct time to perform a timber harvest is vital. Planning and preparation are key – a timber harvest should be thought through carefully. If you plan on performing one because you are in need of quick income, please keep in mind that this will most likely create some unanticipated long term damage to your forest. The decision to harvest should be made well ahead of time, with all of the facts, and no time pressure. Make sure you have good reasons that will benefit both you and your woods.
If you want to do a timber harvest with sustainability in mind, it is important to have a clear and defined goal before you create a forest management plan. Is your goal to improve your treestands? Do you want the forest to be more friendly to recreational activities? Do you want to attract more wildlife habitats? Your long term goal will play a big part in how we go about your timber harvest.
No matter the reason you have for harvesting timber, our first step is always to assess the proposed woodlot with an onsite visit, as well as local municipal land records. Proper planning is the key to a successful, sustainable, and profitable timber harvest.

WOODLOT MANAGEMENT
Environmental Forest Products will work with you to create a customized and comprehensive woodlot management plan. A forest management plan is essential for a healthy and sustainable forest. Woodlot management is important for many reasons: it helps landowners set priorities for their forest, it can help to minimize land use conflicts before they arise, and it can save you both time and money.
A woodlot management plan can be used for several different purposes. A basic plan might describe a landowner’s goals and objectives for the land. It would then provide a description as to how the landowner would achieve those. A more general plan like this can be customized with any additional details a landowner might need.
An example of how a good forest management plan might save you money is that with a good plan, you will mark the perimeters of your timber. If timber theft occurs, you then have a more valid claim. Timber theft can be a big cost that you can reduce via proper forest management planning.
Another big benefit of proper woodlot management saving you money is planned and deliberate timber harvesting, which you can read about above. Wildlife habitat will improve as well, which in turn, serves to strengthen the forest habitat.
Overall, careful and planned woodlot management is essential to maintaining a successful forest.

TIMBER MARKETING
Harvesting your timber is not just as simple as just deciding to do so. You need proper preparation and guidelines. Environmental Forest Products is here to help!
Deciding when to sell your timber is an important first step to any timber harvest. This will be based on tree maturity, future impact to tree growth and timber harvest, as well as various environmental factors.
Once you have decided to sell, it is important to plan your goals for the timber harvest. We can then help you assess your current woodlot situation and decide if your timber is ready to cut. Sometimes, woodlots are not quite ready to harvest when you want them to be – in this case, we can help you mark boundaries, control vines and invasive species, and work to improve tree growth rate.
The next step is to fully review your property and agree to a sale. We will help you measure and mark all trees that will be sold. Then, we will gather bids. We will put together bid packets and send them out to potential buyers. Prospective buyers can then look at marked trees and submit their bids. These will be set to be read on a certain date, and you will accept a bid if satisfactory. Otherwise, the bidding process continues.
Once a bid is accepted, it’s time for a contract. We will help you develop a contract for the buyer and the landowner (you). If the contract is accepted, the buyer has a year to harvest their timber. All trees must be paid for before being harvested.
We will be with you throughout this process – we will visit your woodlot as the sale moves forward, figure out the best access paths, and determine loading sites.
