One of the Most Experienced Forestry Consulting Firms in the Tri-State Area

Environmental Forest Products has been providing certified forestry consulting services since 1991. Henry Kowalec founded the company on a straightforward premise: woodland owners in the Hudson Valley and Catskills region needed an independent forester on their side — someone whose obligation was to the landowner and the long-term health of the woodland, not to a timber buyer or logging company.

The EFP team brings nearly 100 years of combined forestry experience to every project. That depth of experience spans timber cruising and appraisal, 480-a Forest Tax Law management plan preparation, sustainable selective harvesting, commercial land clearing, wildlife habitat management, and standing timber marketing. Projects have ranged from single-parcel consultations of a few acres to multi-hundred-acre commercial timber operations for government and watershed clients.

EFP operates its own equipment fleet — including tracked feller bunchers, forwarders, and log trucks — which means Henry can manage the full cycle of a timber project from initial assessment and plan preparation through harvest execution and final haul. That end-to-end capability, combined with independent consulting forester status, gives landowners a single accountable point of contact for projects that would otherwise require coordinating between separate consultants, contractors, and logging crews.

Low-impact harvesting techniques are standard practice at EFP — not an option. Minimizing site disturbance, protecting residual trees, and leaving the property in condition for the next generation of forest growth is how Henry has maintained a 30-year client relationship record in a region where word-of-mouth is the primary referral channel.

What Environmental Forest Products Does

Periodic selective timber harvest is a critical component of healthy woodlot management — not just a commercial transaction. When done correctly, it improves species composition, releases the best-quality trees, improves forest structure, and sets the stage for stronger future growth. EFP approaches every harvest project with this long-term management objective as the guiding framework, not simply the volume of timber that can be extracted.

The company assists landowners with standing timber marketing across regional and global markets, working to recover full stumpage value for each species and grade of timber on a property. Independent competitive bidding — rather than single-buyer negotiation — is the standard approach for timber sales of significant value.

Beyond timber, EFP provides wildlife habitat improvement planning, land clearing for site development, and 480-a Forest Tax Law management plan preparation for qualifying New York properties. The company has worked with private individuals, agricultural businesses, watershed management authorities, and local governments — on projects ranging from one-hour site consultations to long-term management plans with 10 to 15-year review periods.

Flexible for Any Size Project

As a private, independent forestry consulting firm, Environmental Forest Products has the flexibility to serve landowners across a wide range of project types and sizes. Timber sales have been conducted on properties as small as a few acres and as large as several hundred acres. Consulting engagements range from a single-visit property assessment to multi-year management relationships with formal review cycles.

That flexibility — and the independence that comes with not being affiliated with any timber buyer, mill, or logging contractor — is what allows EFP to act exclusively in the landowner's interest on every project.

What Clients Say

"Just a note to show our appreciation for all your excellent work on the logging of our property in the Town of Kent. You proved in the end to have been the right choice at the beginning to guide us through the process, and verify what is important to us, that you care for the land as well as the harvesting of the lumber. Our hearty recommendation to anyone searching for the right logger."

"I originally approached Henry at Environmental Forest Products LLC to oversee a timber harvest of my 72 acre property, and based on how he conducted his business and responsibility of forest management I asked him to partner on future projects."
